The Russian foreign ministry has called on the United States to refrain from imposing new sanctions against Iran, warning that it would complicate the implementation of the nuclear deal.

Mikhail Ulyanov, the director of the Department for Security Affairs and Disarmament at the Foreign Ministry, said yesterday that taking radical steps would complicate the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known by its acronym JCPOA or more simply the “Iran deal”, reached in 2015 over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

“Any drastic action, including the imposition of fresh sanctions, could under the current circumstances lead to complicating the implementation of the agreement,” Ulyanov said, calling on Washington not to take such steps.
