Saudi Arabia allows licences for women only gyms

February 20, 2017 at 1:29 pm

In its latest set of reforms, the Saudi government has announced that it will begin granting licences for women only gyms this month.

The gyms will solely be used to motivate women to get fit, amid rising obesity among in the Gulf kingdom. They will not be allowed to organise competitive sports programmes, such as football and boxing.

Princess Rima Bint Bandar, vice president for women’s affairs at the General Authority of Sport, informed Saudi daily news outlet Okaz that licenses for women’s gyms will be granted at the end of the month.

The lack of provisions for women’s exercise in Saudi Arabia has taken a toll on people’s health throughout the country.
