Libyan oil smugglers apprehended a Turkish oil tanker in the western Libyan city of Zuwara, the Libya Observer reported yesterday.

It is thought that the owner of the Haci Telli oil tanker owes the smugglers approximately $433,000.

It was reported that “as soon as Haci Telli approached the port, six gunmen boarded the tanker and held its 11-member crew captive.”

A number of companies have exploited the security void in the north African country by buying cheap fuel from local smugglers.

This, along with an increase in corruption, is causing immeasurable damage to the country’s economy.
