A senior Iranian official said that 2,100 combatants have been killed in fighting in Syria and Iraq in recent years.
The head of Iran’s Foundation of Martyrs’ and Veterans’ Affairs, Mohammad Ali Shahidi Mahlati, said: “At present, we have 2,100 martyrs from the Defenders of the Shrine and the path for martyrdom is still open.”

Mahlati did not reveal the nationalities of those killed.
Iran has been supporting Syrian regime President Bashar Al-Assad since 2011 supplying him with soldiers and advisors in addition to mercenaries who came from Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. It has also been support Shia militias in Iraq.
