Sudanese Central Bureau of Statistics announced yesterday that inflation hit 33.53 per cent in February rising from 32.86 per cent in the previous month, Arabi21 reported.

Food and energy price hikes resulting from a cut in subsidies that took place in November have been blamed for the dramatic increase in the rate of inflation.

The Sudanese economy suffered after South Sudan declared independence in 2011 taking with it three-quarters of the country’s oil reserves. Oil production was the main source of foreign currency and government income.

Following the cut in subsidies in November, fuel prices rose by 30 per cent which caused transport costs to increase.
