Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abul-Gheit arrived in the Iraqi capital Baghdad today for talks with Iraqi officials, according to an Iraqi source.

Abul-Gheit arrived in Baghdad for a one-day visit, leading an official delegation, the Foreign Ministry source told the Anadolu Agency, requesting anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

The Arab League chief is expected to meet Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi, President Fuad Masum, Parliament Speaker Salim Al-Jabouri and senior officials during his visit, the source said.

Talks between Abul-Gheit and Iraqi officials are expected to tackle a host of regional and international issues, including the ongoing Iraqi fight against Daesh, the source said.

Iraqi forces are currently engaged in a bitter fight against Daesh to dislodge the terrorist organisation from Mosul, which Daesh overran – along vast swathes of territory in northern and western Iraq – in 2014.
