The European Court of Justice yesterday lifted the travel ban imposed on the daughter of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Sanctions were levied on the Gaddafi family during the Libyan revolution in February 2011, these prohibited them from entering the European Union. The ban was renewed in 2014 with the daughter of Gaddafi, Aisha, who lives in Amman with her family, challenging it.

The court ruled yesterday that the European Council had made it clear that the reason for the travel ban was the involvement of Gaddafi’s supporters in “acts of force and repression and violent attacks against civilians”. It concluded that there was insufficient information about Aisha’s “specific and strong individual role” in the repression to support a travel ban.
