Secret meetings held for resumption of unconditional Israel-Palestine talks

Secret meetings are being held with the objective of resuming unconditional Israel-Palestine talks without a timetable, informed Palestinian sources revealed on Tuesday. According to Palestine’s Al-Manar Radio, the anonymous sources said that international and regional parties, including Arab states, are behind the meetings attended by Israeli and Palestinian officials in Middle East capitals.

Israel, it is claimed, is interested in conducting unconditional talks with the Palestinians in order to avoid international pressure. Such talks would please Israel because they meet its needs, given that they would not require a halt to settlement activities, while Israeli security would be at the top of the US-led agenda in finding any solution.

The Palestinian Authority, meanwhile, apparently does not object to the resumption of talks with Israel, as such a step is seen as a “goodwill gesture” ahead of the PA president’s visit to the White House. Palestinian factions and commentators are warning, however, that the upcoming visit to Washington by Mahmoud Abbas will have “negative consequences” for Palestine.

The Palestinian radio station, which broadcasts from the occupied West Bank, expects Abbas to be put under a lot of pressure by Washington to accept a US plan for a solution to the Israeli-Arab conflict. According to Al-Manar, this plan is supported by Arab states eager to normalise relations with Israel and ally themselves with the Zionist state. Such a move is regarded as a priority with a new enemy — Iran — looming large across the region.
