Saudi Arabia has lodged an official protest against the abuse of some sections of the Egyptian media, a Saudi writer said on Sunday. Khalid Al-Majrashi made his comment on the “Editors’ Hall” talk show on Egyptian TV channel Sada Al-Balad.

Al-Majrashi said that Saudi Arabia had sent an official letter to the Egyptian authorities, calling for a number of Egyptian journalists who abuse his country to be silenced. However, he denied any causal relationship between Saudi Arabia and the suspension of the talk show hosted by Egyptian journalist Ibrahim Issa, who accused MPs of cheating after alleging that they worked to extend Al-Sisi’s presidency. He added that the current visit of Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to Saudi Arabia would include the signing of a code of honour and a memorandum of understanding laying down how to deal with media remarks which could severely damage relations between the two countries.

The writer said that the government in Riyadh will remain silent about any more abuse by Egyptian journalists. The relationship between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, he pointed out, is not based on media remarks.

Saudi-Egyptian relations have been at odds due to their different views of the Syrian issue. While Saudi believes that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad must quit, Egypt says that he must be part of any solution to the crisis.
