ICC seeks former Gaddafi official on war crimes charges

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has ordered the arrest of the former head of Libya’s internal security service, Al-Tuhami Mohamed Khaled, for his role in suppressing the opposition under former regime leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

The court said in a statement on Monday that Khaled is wanted for four crimes against humanity and three war crimes including torture, persecution, cruel treatment and outrages upon personal dignity committed on prisoners held by Libyan security forces during protests against Gaddafi’s regime.

The court added that judges had approved the arrest warrant issued in 2013 against Khaled on charges that include torture and persecution.
In the same statement, the court urged Egypt to arrest and extradite the former Libyan security official.

Libyan media said Khaled was arrested in April 2012 in Cairo but was immediately released due to a lack of an arrest warrant. He is believed to have gone on the run since.
