Egypt: US Senate meeting was bias against us

April 28, 2017 at 4:24 pm

Speakers at a recent hearing by the US Senate Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programmes held well-known negative opinions towards the Egyptian government and were bias against Egypt, Cairo’s foreign ministry said yesterday.

Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesman for the foreign ministry, expressed deep regret over the methodology and manner in which the session was organised. He added that any follow-up on the meeting would immediately reveal that it was organised in order to damage the positive relations between Egypt and the current US administration.

He pointed out that the discussion deliberately ignores the important and pivotal role that Egypt plays in supporting the stability of the Middle East, as well as its heroic positions in the war against terrorism, extremist and toxic ideas. This is in addition to what it faces economically, socially and at the level of security, as a result of the instability facing the region.

At the Senate meeting a number of questions were raised regarding the US’ military support for Egypt and its subsequent use to quash decent and civil liberties, with speakers adding: “The US doesn’t have a way to ensure our assistance is not making the problem worse.”
