Egypt’s police forces have placed the Damietta governorate on high security alert while they investigate several abductions that have raised concerns throughout the region.

According to official sources, the police have placed a permanent security checkpoint near the airport, in addition to carrying out security patrols in a number of vital areas around the city.

Security personnel have been deployed across Damietta’s neighbourhoods, especially the areas where thefts and abductions have occurred.

The Egyptian Parliament approved a three-month countrywide state of emergency on 11 April after two deadly church bombings left at least 45 Coptic-Christians dead.
