An Iraqi army officer said yesterday that Daesh had executed 17 families in Mosul while trying to flee areas under the group’s control.

An officer in the Nineveh Operations Command, Colonel Ahmed Al-Jubouri, told the Anadolu Agency: “Intelligence from our sources inside the neighbourhoods of Mosul, which is still under the group’s control have informed us that 17 families had been executed over the past 24 hours including women who were shot while trying to flee the area.”

He added that it is estimated that more than 60 people were killed.

The organisation carried out the execution in public areas to set an example for others.

Al-Jubouri explained that the families decided to flee the area but they were ambushed by Daesh militants before reaching the Iraqi forces.

Anadolu could not verify the information.
