An Egyptian academic, who sparked controversy when she posted a video on Facebook showing herself belly dancing, has announced that she will run for president in Egypt’s 2018 election.

“Through science, art and freedom, your sun will return back, Egypt; and Egyptians will become a productive people that contribute to human civilisation,” English literature Professor Mona Prince wrote on her Facebook page.

To be honest, I cannot promise to resolve Egypt’s and Egyptians’ problems in one, two or 10 years … Real change needs time.

Prince, who taught at Suez Canal Shams University until she was suspended last month, promised to work with qualified youth people to build Egypt and restore the Egyptian identity during the four-year presidential term. She added that if she becomes president, she will not run for another term because she believes in “alternating power”.

She also promised to “pamper” Egyptians, describing herself as a naturally cheerful and life-loving person who will be “a president with a sense of humour”.
