Iraq’s Sadr calls on Iran to abandon political and sectarian talk

May 22, 2017 at 2:06 pm

The leader of the Sadrist movement in Iraq, Muqtada Al-Sadr, yesterday called on Iran to adopt a policy of openness towards the region’s countries and abandon “political and sectarian polemics”.

Sadr’s remarks came in a letter in response to a question by one of his supporters about his position regarding the victory of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to a second term as head of the country.

“We congratulate the Iranian people on the victory of its moderate reformist candidate, Hassan Rouhani, despite fierce political conflicts,” he said.

I call on the Iranian government to open up to some of the non-occupied countries and other countries in the region and leave political and sectarian tensions that brought only shame and pain to the region.

“The Islamic Republic has a strong influence in the region, and it must take its people to safety and avoid all policies that negatively affect the region,” he added.

He stressed the importance of “adopting dialogue as a starting point and understanding as the way that may serve Islam and Muslims well”.
