The Egyptian Court of Cassation withdrew a three-year prison sentence issued over two years ago against political activist Ahmed Douma, issuing a ruling for a re-trial.
In December 2014, the Criminal Court in Cairo sentenced Douma to three years in prison and a fine of approximately $550 after finding him guilty of insulting the head of the court that was looking into charging him in another case.
Douma is currently serving a life sentence after he, along with others, was found guilty in the case known as the “Cabinet clashes in December 2011”.
A prominent activist in the January 25 Revolution that toppled President Hussein Mubarak, Douma was held in solitary confinement for over 1,200 days.
