Daesh executed 163 Iraqi civilians in one day in Mosul as they were trying to flee the western part of the city last week, UN Human Rights High Commissioner said yesterday.

“The brutality of Daesh and other terrorist groups seemingly knows no bounds,” UN Human Rights High Commissioner, Zeid bin Ra’ad Al-Hussein, told AFP.

He added: “Yesterday, my staff reported to me that bodies of murdered Iraqi men, women and children still lay on the streets of the Al-Shira neighbourhood of western Mosul, after at least 163 people were shot and killed by Daesh to prevent them from fleeing.” He noted there are many who disappeared.

Iraqi forces are currently controlling 90 per cent of the western part of Mosul and they are continuous in their fight to liberate the whole city.

Meanwhile, families in Mosul complain from the oppressive detention of their sons, noting that they are being arrested over claims they are affiliated to Daesh.

Speaking to AFP, Yusra Mohamed said she has not heard anything about her sons, Saddam, 16, and Qusai, 14, after Kurdish forces detained them two months ago. She said that she received a message from the International Red Cross saying they are in prison.

According to Mohamed, Kurdish forces stormed her house and asked about them, noting that the forces told her that they worked with Daesh.

Human Rights Watch said in a recent report that men and children who fled from Daesh had been arrested in Mosul over suspicions that they are affiliated with the group.

The rights group pointed out that ignoring to give information about these people to their families could mount to a war crime, according to AFP.
