Haftar advisor back in Moscow for talks

June 7, 2017 at 12:20 pm

Libyan military strongman Khalifa Haftar’s advisor, Abdulbasit Elbadri, was in Moscow yesterday for talks with its deputy foreign minister, Mikhail Bogdanov.

Badri and Bogdanov focused on potential changes to the UN-backed Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) in order to restart dialogue as well as highlighting points of disagreement in the hopes of bringing viewpoints closer together between Libya’s various factions.

Russia has been seen as one of Haftar’s main supporters and a backer of his forces, the Libyan National Army (LNA), but has also engaged in talks with the UN-backed Presidential Council (PC) based in Tripoli.

The eastern authorities have continuously urged the Russians to start providing weapons and ammunition again but Moscow has stuck rigidly with the UN arms embargo.
