A massive sandstorm swept through the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Saturday turning day into night and burying several homes. The storm brought vast amounts of sand and dust into the city, limiting visibility and bringing many of the capital’s roads to a standstill. The storm lasted about an hour.

According to meteorologists, sandstorms are caused by strong winds blowing over and picking up loose soil or sand causing visibility to be greatly reduced. The abundance of desert terrain surrounding Sudan’s cities makes sandstorms or “haboobs” a common occurrence in Sudan during the summer months.
