A member of the Turkish parliament said on Monday that Qatar would have witnessed a coup if Emir Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani had accepted Donald Trump’s invitation to go to the US.

Burhan Kuzu of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) made his surprise revelation when commenting on the fact that the Qatari leader had rejected the invitation. Trump sent a surprise invitation to the emir following the decision by some Arab countries, particularly Saudi Arabia and Egypt, to cut off diplomatic relations and impose a blockade on the small Gulf State.

According to analysts, Emir Tamim declined an invitation from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to visit Istanbul for the same reason, given the pressure being imposed on Qatar and its ruling family.
