Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has increased the salaries and pensions of military staff for the sixth time since becoming president, in the following instances:

  1. In November 2013 Al-Sisi issued an order to raise Republican Guard salaries by $110 more than their peers with the same ranking but in other divisions of the armed forces. The Republican Guard is an armoured division with the main responsibility of protecting the president.
  2. On 10 July 2014 Al-Sisi issued a new law stipulating an increase in military pensions earned by armed forces members, as outlined in the military’s retirement, insurance, and pensions law. The law provided a 10 per cent increase starting 1 July 2014 without an end date.
  3. On 18 August 2014 an order was issued to amend the maximum amount given for work allowance to members of the armed forces, which is given as part of the pension. This was put into effect on 30 July 2016.
  4. On 22 December 2014 Al-Sisi ordered a 5 per cent increase in pensions for members of the military after having ordered a 10 per cent increase in pensions in July 2014.
  5. On 29 June 2015, Al-Sisi issued republican decree 30 dictating an increase in military pensions and the amendment of some parts of the armed forces’ retirement, insurance, and pension law 90 of 1975. The decree stipulated a 10 per cent increase in pensions as of 1 July 2015.
  6. On 29 March 2016 Al-Sisi issued decree 130 of 2016 which granted special pensions to some volunteering officers, former recruits in the Armed Forces, and those who are “deserving”.
