French journalist succumbs to wounds in Iraq

French journalist Stephane Villeneuve has died after an explosion in Mosul, Iraq [Twitter]

French journalist Stephane Villeneuve has died in Iraq after succumbing to wounds suffered in an explosion in Mosul earlier this week, the French foreign ministry said today.

The mine explosion killed Iraqi journalist Bakhtiyar Haddad and left reporter Veronique Robert wounded, while another freelance reporter suffered minor injuries.

The Iraqi government launched an attack on Daesh’s last stronghold in Iraq, Mosul, in October last year. Since then the group has been using the Old City of Mosul’s narrow alleys to fight back. There have also been reports that fighters have been using civilians as human shields.
