Israel wants Cabinet members to undergo lie detector tests

June 20, 2017 at 4:21 pm

Israeli ministers are proposing a law which would force Cabinet ministers to undergo lie detector tests on an annual basis.

The calls come as a result of a number of leaks to the media which have led to sensitive information being made public.

Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper revealed that the proposal, which was introduced by Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, will be presented by the head of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, Robert Ilatov, suggests all members of the Cabinet go through a lie detector test once a year.

This law is meant to combat the phenomenon of leaks, espionage and the disclosure of state secrets that would harm the national security of the State of Israel. Members of the ministerial Cabinet are responsible for preserving confidential information because their disclosure could affect – in case they are revealed – state security and the army.

Ilatov, who will be presenting the bill, said: “The law came in light of the successive leaks from the meetings of the Cabinet and its aim is to combat this dangerous phenomenon, which threatens the security of the citizens of Israel. The Cabinet sessions can by no means politically assist in this. This is alarming; there is an end that has to be put to this.”
