Most people in Israel believe that there will be another war sometime this year between Israel and Hamas, Safa news agency reported on Wednesday. A poll for Channel 10 TV found that 56 per cent of the public think that war with the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement is inevitable, with just 35 per cent believing that the chance of war is slight because the current Israeli government is weak and cannot make the decision to go to war.

In any case, the poll showed that 82 per cent are confident that the Israel Defence Forces would win a future war, with 57 per cent believing that the government is able to take the right decisions for the country.

Despite the much-vaunted security threats to Israel, most people in Israel believe that the security situation is “OK”. The poll also showed that 36 per cent of Israelis think that a new intifada (uprising) will start. If it does, say 75 per cent, Israel’s security forces will be able to crack down on it.

Israel launched a 51-day offensive against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip during the summer of 2014. More than 2,100 men, women and children were killed by the Israeli troops; at least 11,000 others were wounded.
