Qatar’s rulers must hand over power to other members of their family or face unrest in their country, the former head of Dubai Police warned yesterday.

Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan threatened the Qatari Emir Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani and his father, the former ruler Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, that if they did not step down then there would be widespread demonstrations across the small Gulf state on Friday.

“When we appealed to the Qatari people to rebel against the government’s obedience, they felt its bitterness and cruelty,” Khalfan wrote on Twitter.

Khalfan said masses of Qataris should demonstrate on Friday against the current leadership who he accused of supporting terrorist groups and having links with the Muslim Brotherhood, which is banned in the UAE but not in Qatar.
