A joint raid by the United States and Somalia killed scores of people in southern Somalia yesterday, the Washington Post reported.

Two US apache helicopters raided an Al-Shabaab detention facility alongside the Somali National Army in Kunya Barrow village in Lower Shabelle region. There are no reports on civilian casualties, and the number of prisoners freed is unknown.

Al-Shabaab’s radio Andalus reported that the group thwarted a raid by US and African forces.

This raid follows a US drone strike that targeted Al-Shabaab on 2 July. The drone strike targeted vehicles in the same village.

President Donald Trump introduced new legal authorities in late March to determine parts of Somalia as “temporary battlefields” permitting six-month wars without congressional authorisation.
