July 30, 2017 at 8:28 am

A Libyan warplane belonging to the Tobruk-based House of Representatives was shot down Saturday by the Shura Council of Mujahideen in Derna,  according to military sources.

Muhammed Idris Al-Mansouri, of the Shura Council of Mujahideen in Derna wrote on his official Facebook account that the group detained the pilot and co-pilot, however, the pilot later died and no additional information on the co-pilot was given.

Libya has been locked in violence and turmoil since 2011 when a bloody, popular uprising ended with the ouster and death of former President Muammar Gaddafi.

The oil-rich North African country has remained turbulent, with the country’s stark political divisions yielding at least three different seats of government and a host of rival militia groups.
