A senior international affairs adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has voiced support for Hamas and the positions of Ismail Haniyeh, the movement’s leader, Shehab.ps reported on Monday.

Ali Akbar Velayati made his comments as a Hamas delegation visited Tehran as official guests to take part in the inauguration ceremonies for Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. He stressed that Iranian policy is still to support “the oppressed Palestinian people and their resistance.”

Pointing out that the Israeli occupation had “clearly” contributed to the crises across the region, Velayati noted that it is an enemy that “exists on the division among the Arab and Islamic nations.”

The head of the Hamas delegation and member of the movement’s political bureau, Izzat Al-Reshiq, spoke about the latest developments in Palestine, Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque. He insisted that the Palestinians are resisting the Israeli occupation on behalf of the Muslim Ummah.

Al-Reshiq thanked Iran for its support for the Palestinian cause and emphasised the importance of the role of the Arab and Islamic states in supporting the resistance and working toward ending the Israeli occupation of Palestine. The delegation met several Iranian officials during the visit, including the foreign minister.
