Two Algerians detained in Iraq for “illegal crossing of borders” were released yesterday, the Foreign Ministry confirmed.

Imprisoned since 2003 for “illegally crossing the Iraqi borders”, the two Algerians were handed over to the representatives of the Algerian embassy in Baghdad, following efforts by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdelkader Messahel during his last visit to Iraq where he discussed with the Iraqi authorities the case of prisoners detained in the country.

It was not revealed why the men were attempting to cross illegally. According to Huffington Algerie, the Algerian embassy in Iraq has undertaken the necessary procedures to allow the two Algerians to return home as soon as possible.
