Qatar: Unemployment down to 0.1%

Qatar’s unemployment rate fell to 0.1 per cent in the second quarter of this year, compared to 0.2 per cent in the same period last year, official data has revealed.

Doha continues to have the lowest unemployment rates in the world with employment rates rising despite the blockade imposed on Doha by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt since 5 June.

There were 2,873 jobseekers in Qatar, both citizens and foreigners, at the end of the second quarter of this year, the figures show, compared to 3,293 in the same period last year, according to the data of the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics.

Of those, 38.5 per cent were males, while 1,768 were females.  The unemployment rate amongst Qataris was 0.4 per cent.

The total population of the Gulf state at the end of the second quarter of this year was 2.566 million.

Qatar has maintained the world’s highest per capita gross domestic product (GDP), reaching $129,000 a year, despite the decline in world oil and gas prices in 2016.
