Relations between Mauritania and neighbouring Morocco are could be rattled after Rabat agreed to host a number of Mauritanian opposition activists, political sources revealed.

The sources, who asked not to be named, told Quds Press that Mauritania is unhappy that Morocco is hosting businessman Mohamed Ould Bouamatou, whom Nouakchott accuses of supporting a number of seeking to harm public security in the country.

“Bouamatou is now being followed up by the judiciary, and there is an international warrant for his arrest, his manager and a number of other opponents,” the sources said, adding that “Nouakchott considers Morocco is now a stronghold of the Mauritanian opposition, and views it as an unfriendly position.”

On the other hand, the sources confirmed that an Emirati military delegation is on a visit Mauritania to meet with leaders of the Mauritanian army.

“Mauritania has cut its relations with Qatar in response to UAE and not Saudi pressure,” sources said.
