Turkey has signed a deal to purchase the S-400 air defence system from Russia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was reported as saying.

“A deposit has also been paid as far as I know,” Erdogan told reporters upon his arrival from Kazakhstan on Sunday, Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper reported.

“I and Mr. Putin are determined on this issue,” he added.

A military adviser to Russian President, Vladimir Putin, Vladimir Kozhin, said the S-400 contract with Turkey was “strictly compatible with our strategic interests”.

“On that score, one can quite understand the reaction of some Western countries who are trying to put pressure on Turkey,” he added.

Last month, the Pentagon expressed concern about Turkey’s intention to purchase the system.
