Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano said that the return of the Italian Ambassador to Cairo, Giampaolo Cantini, aims to “reinforce Italian demands to reach the truth” regarding Giulio Regeni’s case.

The state television quoted the head of Italian diplomacy today talking about his meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, in London yesterday, saying: “I told Minister Shoukry that sending our ambassador to Egypt aims to reinforce the Italian demands to reach the truth. We will not be satisfied with anything less than the truth regarding Regeni’s case.”

“We want to support the judicial cooperation, and therefore, Ambassador Cantini has clear authorisation and orders from our side to do everything he can to ensure the effectiveness of this cooperation with Egypt and to make it as successful as possible,” he added.

Alfano revealed that Shoukry gave him a response “ensuring his willingness to do everything possible to reach the truth”.

Alfano and Shoukry met on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting on Libya, attended by diplomats from the US, UK, France, Egypt and the UAE, along with the participation of the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Ghassan Salame.

Giulio Regeni, a 28-year-old Italian graduate studying for his PhD at Cambridge University, went missing on the fifth anniversary of the January 25 Revolution. His body was found on 4 February 2016 lying on the side of a Cairo highway showing signs of torture.
