Sudan is keen to maintain GCC cohesion, says Foreign Minister

Sudan’s Foreign Minister said on Tuesday that his country is keen to consolidate relations between the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Ibrahim Ghandour made his comments during a meeting with his UAE counterpart, Abdullah Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, on the fringe of the UN General Assembly’s 72nd session in New York.

Ghandour stressed that Khartoum will stay neutral in the Gulf crisis. Furthermore, it will support Kuwaiti mediation between Qatar and the blockading countries of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt. The two officials were keen to discuss such matters of mutual concern.

The Sudanese minister also briefed Al-Nahyan on the development of relations between his country and the United States and efforts to lift sanctions imposed on Khartoum. In this respect, Ghandour has met with senior officials in Washington over the past few days, including the US President’s Advisor on Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, Tom Bosset, and Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan to discuss the lifting of sanctions.
