Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman believes that the Assad regime has won the ongoing war in Syria and many European and moderate Sunni Arab states are working to get closer to Assad, Arabs48.com reported yesterday.

He told the Hebrew media news website Walla: “We hope that the United States will be more active on the Syrian front and in the Middle East in general. We are on the northern front against the Russians, Iranians, Turks and Hezbollah.”

“I am looking at one of the biggest contradictions,” he said. “It is what happened in Syria where about 600,000 were killed in a civil war during which all red lines were crossed… and [there are] seven million refugees. I do not remember any war bloodier than this since WWII.”

However, he said, “Assad has emerged victorious in the battle. I see a long international queue lining up to woo Assad, including Western nations, including moderate Sunnis. Suddenly everyone wants to get close to Assad.”

He added: “The United States has quite a few challenges of its own, but the more active the United States is, the better it will be for the State of Israel.”
