Iraq delivers gas to Kuwait as part of Gulf War compensation

Kuwait has approved an Iraqi offer to received natural gas as part of the Gulf War compensation it is due, Kuwaiti oil minister Essam Al-Marzouq announced yesterday.

“The Kuwaiti and Iraqi sides are currently discussing the price details,” Al-Marzouq told Kuwait’s Al-Watan at a press conference.

According to the agreement, Iraq will begin by exporting 50 million cubic metres of natural gas, which will be increased to 200 million cubic metres.

The Kuwaiti government yesterday demanded the Geneva-based United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) grant Iraq a grace period to review options proposed by Baghdad to pay the remaining $4.6 billion in Gulf War compensation.

The compensation due to Kuwait as a result of Iraq’s invasion of its land in 1990 is estimated at $177.6 billion, of which the United Nations approved $37.2 billion. Kuwait has received $9.3 billion.
