Hamas politburo head Ismail Haniyeh expressed his hope that lifting the 20-year-old US sanctions on Sudan would be a “step towards more development for Khartoum,” Quds Press reported on Sunday.

Haniyeh congratulated Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir regarding lifting the US “oppressive sanctions.”

In a letter he sent to Al-Bashir, Haniyeh expressed the “deep happiness” of the Palestinian people at the lifting of sanctions which harmed the Sudanese and their country for years.

The top leader of the Palestinian movement stressed the “deep fraternity between the Sudanese and the Palestinian people” and thanked Sudan for its “courageous” support for the Palestinians and their cause.

“Sudan was able to face these sanctions and bear their negative consequences, proved that it is able to face the challenges, and go ahead towards development and prosperity,” Heniyeh said in his letter.

He also hoped that lifting the sanctions would bring “promising horizons” to Sudan, its people and its leadership.
