The 11th meeting of Syria Major Donors will be held in Qatar today under the chairmanship of the UN Secretary-General’s Humanitarian Envoy, Dr Ahmed Bin Mohammed Al Meraikhi.

This is the second time that Doha hosts the meeting.

The meeting aims to strengthen dialogue among Syria donors on the humanitarian crisis affecting the country, assess efforts in the humanitarian response to the crisis and strengthen international efforts in this regard.

The Major Donors Group was established following the Second International Humanitarian Pledging Conference which took place in 2014 in Kuwait with the aim of establishing a platform for major donors to discuss issues related to ensuring disbursement of pledges and strengthening humanitarian dialogue among donors.

Over the past three years, the group has played a key role in ensuring the implementation of the political and financial commitments made at the Supporting Syria Conferences, as well as mobilising additional resources.

During the last donors’ conference which took place in Brussels last April, the international community pledged $6 billion to fund humanitarian action as well as to develop activities for the current year.

The donors have also pledged $3.7 billion for activities during 2018-2019, as well as political commitments to support neighbouring countries that host more than five million Syrian refugees.
