Militants attacked a Bahraini police bus near the Jidhafs area outside the capital Manama today, wounding several policemen, the interior ministry said on Twitter.

The attack targeted the bus on the Khalifa bin Salman highway, the ministry said.

Social media users shared images of the bus, with some reporting that a police officer had been killed in the attack.

The government blames the attacks on Shia militants it says are backed by Iran to destabilise the country, a charge Tehran denies.

Bahrain, which has a Shia Muslim majority population and is ruled by a Sunni royal family, has seen unrest since the “Arab Spring” protests across the region in 2011.

Many of Bahrain’s Shias say they suffer discrimination, which the government denies. It accuses Shia power Iran of fomenting unrest on its soil, a charged Tehran denies.
