The German foreign ministry on Tuesday warned its citizens against travelling to some parts in Egypt following the deadly attack in the El-Bahariya Oasis area.

The German Embassy in Cairo said the ministry had warned its citizens against being close to areas of demonstrations and popular gatherings, especially religious places, universities, state institutions and tourist areas in the Red Sea.

The embassy stressed in a statement that there is no warning against travel to Egypt as a whole.

“There is no a travel warning released from Germany against the whole of Egypt, the issued travel warning is only targeting certain areas in Egypt,” it said.

The ministry noted that two Germans were killed in July on a beach in the northeastern city of Hurghada.

On Friday, violent clashes erupted between Egyptian policemen and unknown militants in the El-Bahariya Oasis area which led to the killing of 16 policemen and killing and wounding 15 militants. In the aftermath of the attack, Cairo extended the state of emergency for a third time across the country.

Earlier in July, Germany called on its citizens to be careful when travelling to Egypt due to the possibility of terrorist operations.
