Arab League chief rejects attempts to sow unrest in Lebanon

The Arab League chief has condemned any attempts to instigate unrest and spread tension and strife in Lebanon, calling on all Lebanese parties to uphold the country’s interests over any other considerations.

Arab League Secretary General spokesman, Mahmoud Afifi, said Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit held a series of telephone calls with Lebanese President Michel Aoun outgoing Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to discuss with them the possible repercussions of Hariri’s resignation.

Aboul Gheit expressed hope that Lebanon will overcome the current crisis without affecting the country’s peace or stability.

Last Saturday, in a televised broadcast from Saudi Arabia, Lebanon’s prime minister unexpectedly resigned. Hariri blamed Iran and Hezbollah for his decision and alluded to information about an assassination plot against him.
