Egypt’s Al-Azhar: US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital 'threatens world's peace'

Egypt’s Al-Azhar warned today of the United States (US) administration’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, media sources reported.

“The US intention to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital would inflame public opinion among all Muslims, threaten the world’s peace and spread hatred across the world.” Al-Azhar stressed in a statement.

“Taking Israel’s side and preventing implementation of resolutions condemning Israeli acts against the people, land and holy places in Palestine have lost peoples’ confidence in the international community’s integrity,” Al-Azhar noted, adding “this one of the main reasons of terrorism emergence in the world.”

Egypt’s highest Islamic body stressed that the “Jerusalem’s Arabi-Palestinian identity is not subject for change or external meddling,” pointing out that the United Nations (UN) does not recognise such a “violating” act.

Al-Azhar called on the international community and the UN General Assembly, to “strongly” respond to the US move. It also called on the Arabic countries to “work together to prevent the US decision from being implemented.”

On Friday, a US official said that Trump was likely to officially recognise Jerusalem as the new capital for the Jewish state. The official added that he is also considering the relocation of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to holy city
