Jordan parliament to review peace treaty with Israel

December 11, 2017 at 11:22 am

The Jordanian parliament voted unanimously yesterday to review the Wadi Araba peace treaty and all agreements signed between Jordan and Israel.

Fourteen Jordanian lawmakers signed a memorandum calling for the launch of measures to abolish the Wadi Araba peace treaty signed in 1994.

The deputies said that Israel “has violated the treaty by being complicit with the United States to move the US embassy to the occupied city of Jerusalem and to recognise the city as Israel’s capital”.

The parliament authorised its legal committee to examine all agreements signed with Israel, including the peace treaty, and to document all violations committed by Israel during the past years.

According to the memo Israel has violated international laws and United Nations resolutions, and attacked the Hashemite Custodianship of Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem imposing Israeli sovereignty over Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Jordanian parliamentarian Khalil Attiya, who sponsored the memo, pointed out that Israel’s imposition of sovereignty over Al-Aqsa Mosque resulted in initiating a settlement plan and extremist acts aimed at dividing Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Last week US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and announced that the US embassy will be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
