Hundreds of students and faculty members protested against the decision yesterday, chanting slogans which condemned Trump’s decision and called for support for Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Last week, Trump recognised Jerusalem as undivided capital of Israel, announcing that the US embassy will be moved from Tel Aviv to the city. The decision, which contravened international law, received global condemnation and led to an emergency session of the UN Security Council being held where only the US and Israel supported the plan.

During a telephone conversation on the day of the announcement, the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, warned Trump of the serious repercussions of moving Washington’s embassy to Jerusalem. Al Thani warned that the move would complicate security and stability in the Middle East.

Qatar’s position, he added, would be based on a two-state solution which guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
