Algeria: 60,000 policemen to secure New Year’s celebrations

Algerian security authorities will deploy 60,000 police officers to secure the New Year’s celebrations, a security official said yesterday.

Majeed Saadi, director of urban security at the Algerian police, told reporters that the Directorate General of National Security has put in place a security plan throughout the country on New Year’s Eve which includes venues where cultural and entertainment events are being held as well as “sensitive facilities”.

According to Saadi, the security measures will also include public transport stations and railways in various governorates and the metro in Algiers.

Of those deployed, 12,000 will be tasked with securing the country’s land, sea and air borders.
