Former head of Hamas’ Political Bureau, Khaled Meshaal, arrived in Morocco on Tuesday evening with a delegation from the movement after being invited by the ruling Justice and Development Party, Quds Press reported.

The party’s former secretary-general, Abdelilah Benkirane, said: “Khaled Meshaal is a guest in Morocco. He arrived at the request of King Mohamed IV. He is a welcomed guest in our country.”

He added: “We want to hear about the situation in Palestine from him and his brothers. We want to hear about the challenges they face in their resistance of the occupation, especially after the latest decision of the US administration about Jerusalem.”

On 6 December, US President Donald Trump announced his administration’s intention to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move the US embassy to the occupied Holy City. The decision has caused widespread unrest in the occupied territories with daily protests which have been met with a heavy handed response by Israeli occupation forces. To date, more than 600 Palestinians have been arrested including a number of women and children.
