On Sunday, UN Special Envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Angelina Jolie called on representatives of countries and international organizations to visit Syrian refugee camps in order to see their suffering.

This call was delivered at a press conference held by Jolie following her one-day visit to the Kingdom during which she visited Zaatari camp for Syrian refugees in eastern Jordan.

“It’s painful to come here and see the same suffering,” said Jolie.

“The international community must come to see the suffering of the Syrian refugees and how the Syrians are living in the camps. There must be a solution for the Syrian crisis.”

She went on saying “the crisis still persists, and we hope it will end.”

Zaatari is the largest refugee camp for Syrians in Jordan, it hosts around 80,000 Syrian refugees.

There are also three other camps in Jordan, namely the Emirati camp known as Mrajeeb al-Fhood, Azraq refugee camp and the al-Hadiqa camp in al-Ramtha.

Jordan is linked to its northern neighbor Syria through a 375 kilometer boarder line, which makes of the Kingdom one of the most important host countries for Syrians, with a number of 1.3 million; half of them have the status of “refugee”.

Since mid-March 2011, the Syrian opposition has demanded to end more than 45 years of Bashar al-Assad’s family rule and the establishment of a democratic state in which power will be transferred. However, the Syrian regime has opted for a military solution to stop the protests, pushing Syria into a spiral of violence and bloody battles between the regime and the opposition forces.
