Egyptian army destroys tunnel under Gaza border

February 3, 2018 at 1:00 pm

Besieged Gaza relies on the cross-border tunnel network to meet needs of its 2 million inhabitants

The Egyptian army announced on Friday the destruction of a tunnel under the Gaza border, Anadolu has reported. A spokesman said that explosive devices in three warehouses as well as a tunnel used by “terrorists” were destroyed.

Since September 2015, the Egyptian army has been pumping sea water under the border in an attempt to destroy all of the tunnels used by the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip to smuggle essential goods. The tunnels have been described as Gaza’s “lifeline” but Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has backed the Israeli-led siege by trying to destroy all of them.

The Egyptian authorities claim that the tunnels are used by Daesh and other terrorists who target the army and police in Sinai.
