Address by Dr Pierre Conesa at MEMO’s ‘Crisis in Saudi Arabia: War, Succession and the Future’ conference  held in London on November 18, 2017.

A lecturer at the Paris Institute for Political Studies, Conesa is a former civil administrator at the France’s Ministry of Defence, where he was the Deputy Director of the Strategic Affairs Delegation, before retiring in 2012. He became director of the European Company of Strategic Intelligence (CEIS) and is a member of the Res Publica Foundation, an independent think tank. He is author of “The Manufacturing of an Enemy, or How to Kill with a Clean Conscience” and “Dr Saud and Mr Jihad: The Religious Diplomacy of Saudi Arabia” amongst others.

The making of the Kingdom and how we got here

This panel will examine the history of Saudi Arabia and discuss the current political, religious and economic structure of the Kingdom.  It will also assess the fault-lines, contradictions and tensions in Saudi society.
