A US State Department delegation arrived in Sudan on Monday to discuss Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam, the Sudanese Media Centre (SMC) has reported.

The Centre said that the US delegation, led by Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of African Affairs, Eric Stromayer, will also visit Ethiopia and Egypt to explore their positions on the dam. The intention is to form a neutral view that contributes to providing the necessary assistance to find common ground in the search for understandings and solutions that satisfy all parties.

The SMC also reported that Egypt’s Ambassador to Sudan, Osama Shaltout, has said that the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Water Resources from Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia, as well as representatives of the security services of the three countries, will meet to discuss the Ethiopian Dam on 4 and 5 April in Khartoum.

“The Renaissance Dam meetings follow up on the agreement reached by the presidents of the three countries in Addis Ababa,” explained Shaltout. He added that the participants will discuss all issues related to the dam in order to make progress.

Egypt opposes the Ethiopian project, fearing that it may harm its annual share of water from the River Nile. The mighty river is the main water source in Egypt.
